Default 1991 Honda accord ignition problems

MY CAR:: 1991 Honda Accord 2.5L 5 Speed

So just yesterday my ignition started behaving foul. The key won't stay in the on position. I think it's the ignition unit because the only way I can have the engine stay on is to "hold the key in the on position". So I actually have to hold it cranked all the way.

How can I trouble shoot this and/or should I replace the whole lock cylinder or what parts. Sorry if this post is vague, but I don't really work on cars. I am good with my hands and DIY everything, just never had this problem before.

Thank you.

If the key could turn in the lock cylinder, the mechanical side is ok. I would replace the electrical part of the ignition switch. I would pick up a Haynes manual to give you some decent instructions.

The difficult part will be removing the two bolts that hold the bracket, because the bolt head is rounded for a security feature.

So the wire harness that goes connected to the cylinder could be the culprit? I always thought the cylinder locked the key to ON position. But yeah, it will run. I literally had to drive it home holding the key in the on position. Hard task.... PIA especially in a stick.

The electrical part holds the key in place (#10). You may be able to remove the electrical part #10 without unbolting the mechanical part of the lock. The two bolts (#3) in the picture below are the break away bolts need to be removed to take off the lock assembly.

My friend's accord had a black plastic cover that forced me to unbolt the lock assembly. You may be able to change the 91 without having to do this. Remove the plastic covers on the steering wheel to inspect.
