The car is a 1993 Honda Accord with a metal on metal grinding noise that seems like it would be the right rear wheel bearing. I am an experienced mechanic but have never worked on one of these, my experience is mostly medium duty trucks.

What kind of bearing is in there and how do I replace it?

Wheel bearings tend to make a rumbling noise. I am not sure if you would have to buy the hub/bearing as an assembly for the rear. On the front, you can have the bearing pressed in, but I am not sure about the back ones.

I would check the brakes pads and rotors first. A frozen rear caliper can also cause metal on metal sounds coming from the back of the car.

 

First remove the brake drum; 2 threaded holes in it will help if it is stuck to the hub.
You can then pop off the hub cap, remove the 32mm nut and take off the hub assy.
About $135 for the hub assy.
To check for bad bearings I have the car raised up and use a socket on an impact to spin the tire at a good speed and listen to the bearing from the back side with a stethoscope or long screwdriver as a stethoscope.

 

PA honda, it has drum brakes on the rear.

Honda dude, Do you have to replace the whole hub assembly or can you just replace the bearing? If so is the bearing pressed in?

if it is the bearing , buy an after market hub assembly a lot cheaper than dealer

 

Pull off the brake drum & have a good look around. Check for shiny metal that's worn from rubbing against the inside of the drum. (Just to rule that out as the source of noise)
