My '00 owners manual is very vague on illustrating the location of the block coolant drain plug. Is it the plug right below the oil filter?

 

the engine block doesnt have a drain plug that i know of. it does have a freeze plug.....but you dont want to take that out.

 

4 or 6 cyl?

4cyl Blocks have a coolant drain plug on the block right above the oil filter on the backside of the engine. My engine is out but at a friends place so I can't take any pictures for you, sorry.

According to the owners manual, it indicates a coolant drain plug on 4 cyl blocks that must be removed in order to completely drain all of the coolant at replacement time. Otherwise, only 2/3 of the coolant is removed. The picture is extremely vague, so I dont know for sure where its at. There is a large screw-in plug right below the filter but I am not sure if thats it. This should be a simple procedure, inasmuch as coolant change is an important, fundamental maintenance item.

 

There should not be any coolant flow on the lower part of the engine (below the oil filter) The bolt you're looking for is above the oil filter, but it's hidden when you are looking from underneath the car.. if you put your hand above that little ledge above the oil filter, you'll find the plug which requires either a 17 or 19mm socket. it's just under the one coolant hose that runs across the backside of the block.

Is this a Canadian or northern-states vehicle? Like my car, it looks to me like yours has a block heater (white arrow pointing to it) - a very good thing, IMO. I believe this is where the block coolant drain would normally be on engines that do not have a block heater.


To drain the coolant, just pull the red plug straight off the heater and then unscrew the brass body of the heater from the block. Make sure you put a big bucket under the car, because you're going to have quite a flood of coolant come out of that big hole.

You should put some sealant on the threads of the heater when you screw it back into the block.
